Imagery Rescripting and Reprocessing Therapy
Introducing IRRT to Australia
Imagery Rescripting & Reprocessing Therapy (IRRT) provides a gentle and effective approach to processing distressing memories, blocks, and schemas.
Developed in the early 1990s by Professor Dr. Mervyn Schmucker, IRRT is an imagery-based therapy approach initially designed to treat adult victims of childhood sexual or physical abuse.
Since then, IRRT has been further developed and refined expanding its range of indications to effectively address a wide spectrum of trauma-related and stress-induced psychological symptoms.
While IRRT is well-established in German-speaking countries, it is still relatively unknown in Australia. One of the main reasons for this is that training and literature on IRRT have primarily been available in German.
I was fortunate to receive training and supervision directly from the founder of IRRT, and now, I’m on a mission to make this therapy more accessible in English-speaking countries.
What IRRT can help with
IRRT has been successfully used as a treatment component in the management of a range of things such as:
Anxiety Disorders
Depression
Grief
Stress reduction
Eating Disorders
Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
Personality Disorders
Sexual and physical abuse
Adjustment Disorder

Key Benefits of IRRT
Reprocessing of traumatic memories: IRRT helps you gain control over your memories, reducing flashbacks and nightmares, and fostering a sense of empowerment over the past.
Development of healthy coping mechanisms: Learn effective strategies to manage difficult emotions, build resilience, and navigate life's challenges with newfound strength.
Inner child work: Cultivate self-compassion and inner strength, allowing you to soothe and support your younger self.
Clinical Evidence: Just as effective as EMDR
Multiple controlled and naturalistic studies have demonstrated IRRT's effectiveness in treating post-traumatic stress disorders, showing results comparable to or superior to other established therapies such as prolonged exposure and EMDR.
